We’d also like to acknowledge the valuable support from investors, partners, and clients, whose insights have helped shape our technology, operations, and marketing. Read on to learn more about our journey from 1 Big Idea to 1 million marks!

What’s the Big Idea?

The genesis for the concept of Lionel - a floor marking robot for show layouts in the Exhibitions Industry, took shape in mid 2018. The project was spearheaded by Alex Wyatt, Founder and CEO of August Robotics, following months of market research, strategic investigation and customer discovery.

The fledgling team of robotics and commercial specialists had discovered a latent, underserved need for better, more efficient floor marking for exhibitions. It was a stimulating and difficult design problem to solve, and the team was motivated by the Exhibition industry’s warmth toward innovation and new ideas.

Within a year, a rough prototype was created that could demonstrate a proof of concept. The first demonstration of the demo was met with a standing ovation during customer demos - a pretty good sign that the team was onto something magical 🙂 Lionel Ver 1 was launched at UFI Global Conference 2019 and began serving our customers shortly after.

In the 6 years following this, the team had to battle a worldwide Exhibition shutdown (2 years of down-time), innovate the Lionel marking mechanism multiple times and transform the Lionel business model from a highly curated service to a user-friendly and productized Lease model allowing clients to deploy their own robots. It’s been a fun and challenging journey and we’re proud of the impact we’ve delivered on the way.

Growth on all fronts

Caption: Having multiple regional teams close to our customers has been essential for our growth strategy

The company’s launch strategy focused on securing a strong presence in two of the most dynamic regional Exhibition hubs - Las Vegas and Germany. This required seamless collaboration between our research and product teams developing our robots, and the regional teams handling business development and client support. Managing this effort demanded extensive logistical coordination, which has been greatly streamlined thanks to the invaluable support of DB Schenker - a vital partner for both our company and the broader Exhibition and Fair industry.

As our reputation grew, we quickly expanded our operations across the UK and Asia-Pacific. Building on the lessons learned from our first customers, we built strong client-facing teams that could quickly understand market and customer needs, and a dynamic product team that could act on this information to develop new technology.

Innovation Culture

Innovation Culture

Developing Robotic automation solutions is highly technical and demanding. Our engineers specialize in a range of disciplines including Computer Science and AI, Mechanical and Mechatronic engineering, Electrical systems and materials science. Behind the scenes there are also significant efforts to stress-test systems and user interface software, to ensure stable performance of our products when they get in the client’s hands

To ensure our teams are constantly driven to focus on what’s most pressing, they work in 6 week development sprints. This is just enough time to find, implement and test new technologies and resolve feature requests from clients. It also means we’re able to bring new tech to market creating a powerful competitive advantage and opportunities for refinement.

This has allowed our robotic systems to quickly become self-service productized solutions, ensuring greater availability and lower barriers to entry for clients.
